Wylam sits on the north bank of the Tyne, about ten miles west of Newcastle, and has a special place in railway history as the birthplace of George Stephenson. His cottage by the riverside path is looked after by the National Trust, and the village still has its own station on the Tyne Valley line. With wooded riverbanks and a strong community feel, it is a popular place to live.
Housing here includes Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces, stone cottages, and more recent family homes. Many have been extended or updated over the years, and residents tend to care a great deal about how work is finished. That suits us: we like to take our time over detail.
In older Wylam homes, it is often the original details that make a house special: panelled doors, deep skirting boards, picture rails and fireplaces. When these are damaged, it is usually better to repair them than to replace them with something modern that never quite looks right. We can splice in new timber, rebuild worn edges and refit loose mouldings, then finish them to blend in.
Decorating in these houses calls for patience. Plaster may have hairline cracks, woodwork may have many layers of old gloss, and walls are rarely perfectly flat. Proper preparation is the difference between a finish that looks tired within a year and one that lasts. Our decorating service puts that preparation first.
Newer and extended homes have their own needs, such as building furniture for children's rooms, fitting blinds in large windows, or adding storage to make the most of the space. We can handle these alongside the more traditional work on the same visit.
Get in touch through our contact form or by phone with a description of what you would like doing, plus photos if you can. For joinery and decorating we usually visit to measure and assess before confirming a quote. Everything is agreed up front, and there is no obligation to go ahead.
We bring dust sheets, protect floors and furniture, and leave rooms clean and tidy. If a job turns out to need a different trade, for example a plasterer for a large area of blown plaster, we will tell you straight away.
Plenty of people in Wylam work from home at least part of the week, and we are often asked to turn a spare bedroom, box room or corner of a landing into a practical workspace. That might mean building a desk and storage units, fitting floating shelves, hanging blinds to cut glare on screens and mounting a monitor or TV on the wall. For families, we put up stair gates, build children's furniture and add hooks and shelving in hallways to tame coats, bags and boots, which matters in a village where the riverside paths can get muddy.
We also cover nearby Heddon-on-the-Wall, Horsley and Ovingham, as well as Crawcrook and Ryton on the south side of the river.
