Hartley is really two places. New Hartley is an inland former mining village, remembered for the 1862 Hartley Pit disaster, when over two hundred men and boys lost their lives at the Hester Pit and which led to a change in the law on mine shafts. Old Hartley is a small cluster of homes on the coast road near Seaton Sluice, overlooking the sea and St Mary's Island to the south. We cover both.
New Hartley has rows of older terraced houses alongside newer homes, while Old Hartley and the surrounding coastal stretch are more exposed to the weather. So our work ranges from interior decorating and carpentry in snug village homes to repairing exterior woodwork that has taken a battering from the wind.
Older terraced cottages in New Hartley often have thick walls, small rooms and woodwork that has been painted repeatedly over many decades. That makes them lovely to live in but sometimes awkward to work on. Shelves need fixing securely into masonry, doors may need careful trimming to deal with uneven floors, and decorating usually needs good preparation to give a clean finish.
Our carpentry and joinery work covers doors, skirting, architrave and simple built-in storage, all made to suit the space rather than forcing standard sizes into rooms that were never standard. For decorating, we fill and sand before painting and protect your furniture and floors as we go.
Newer properties in the area tend to need help with practical set-up and upkeep: wall-mounted televisions, blinds, curtain poles and occasional repairs to kitchen fittings. Where you have a mixed list of jobs, our general odd jobs service means you can get them sorted in a single visit.
Reach us through the contact form or by phone and let us know what you need. Photos and approximate measurements help a great deal. If we need to see the work in person, we will arrange a convenient time to visit, then confirm a quote. We will not start anything until you have agreed to it.
We are happy to quote for single tasks or longer lists, and for jobs in rented homes on behalf of landlords or letting agents.
Homes close to the coast between Seaton Sluice and Whitley Bay tend to attract plenty of interest, and first impressions count. Before photographs are taken or viewings start, it is worth tackling the small things buyers and tenants notice: scuffed skirting, a stained ceiling, mouldy sealant, a wobbly banister or a door that will not shut. A few days of focused work, often painting in neutral colours plus a handful of repairs, can make a house feel cared for. We can help you decide what is worth doing and what can be left for the next owner.
Hartley sits close to Seaton Sluice and Seaton Delaval, and we work across those villages as well as Holywell, Seghill and the Brierdene side of Whitley Bay.
