Cowgate lies in the west of Newcastle where Ponteland Road heads out from the city past the edge of the Town Moor, with Fenham to the south, Kenton to the north-east and the climb of Kenton Bank close by. The Cowgate roundabout is a familiar landmark for anyone driving out towards the A1 or Ponteland. It is a largely residential area with local shops, schools and green space nearby, and it is only a short bus ride from the city centre.
Much of the area was laid out as a council estate between the wars and shortly afterwards, so many streets are lined with brick semi-detached houses and short terraces with front and back gardens. Plenty of these homes are now privately owned and have been extended or modernised, while others remain rented through housing associations and private landlords. Either way, they tend to need the same practical upkeep.
The work we do in Cowgate is mostly about keeping homes comfortable and in good repair. Doors that scrape on the floor, loose banisters, cupboards that no longer close properly and tired paintwork in busy hallways come up again and again. Outside, gates, fence panels and old sheds take plenty of wear from the weather on this side of the city.
For timber work such as doors, handrails, skirting and storage, our carpenter in west Newcastle can repair or replace what is there with minimal fuss. Bathrooms are another frequent call-out: mould-stained silicone is a common problem in older bathrooms without strong ventilation, and replacing it properly, after cleaning and drying the joint, makes a lasting difference. For dripping taps, running cisterns and small leaks, our help with everyday plumbing covers the essentials.
We also do interior painting, and we can freshen up a single room or a whole downstairs in time for a special occasion. As with all our work, we do not take on electrical or gas jobs.
Getting started is simple: describe what you need using our contact page, or phone us on 0191 603 0221. Include your rough location in Cowgate and any photos you can take. We will send a free quote, and where the job is not clear from photos alone we will offer to take a look in person. Housing association tenants should check with their landlord first, as some repairs are their responsibility.
On the day, we arrive with materials, cover up where we are working and leave things clean and tidy. If you are planning a bigger change, such as redecorating before selling or after buying a Cowgate house, we can phase the work room by room so you can carry on living there comfortably.
We are frequently working nearby in Fenham, Denton Burn, Westerhope and Fawdon, as well as right across the city from our base in Jesmond.

Cowgate FAQs
Usually, yes. We re-secure brackets into solid fixings, replace damaged brackets and can repair or replace loose spindles. If the handrail itself is split, we can fit a new length.
Mould often grows back when old sealant is covered rather than removed, or when the joint is not fully dry before resealing. We strip out the old silicone, clean and dry the joint and apply fresh sealant, which tends to last much better.
You can, but it is worth checking with your landlord first, as many repairs are their responsibility and some need their permission. For things like putting up shelves or assembling furniture, it is usually straightforward.
Yes. We are happy to quote for a single task, although grouping several small jobs into one visit often works out more efficient.
